How do I stop Windows Firewall and Defender from blocking Sync?

Some Firewall and Anti-Virus programs, such as the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender may block Sync from working properly. Here is how to add Sync as an exception.

Windows 11 Windows 10 Windows 7

Windows Firewall

To allow Sync through the firewall:

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start Menu.

  2. Click Firewall & network protection.

  3. Select Allow an app through firewall.

    • If you’re using antivirus software (such as Kaspersky, ESET, Norton, or similar), you may need to temporarily disable it to access this setting on your device.
  4. Click Change settings. You may need to enter your administrator password.

  5. If Sync appears in the list, check the box next to it.

    • Make sure both Private and Public are selected.
  6. If Sync is not listed, click Allow another app… and browse to Sync.exe, usually located at:
    C:\Program Files\Sync\Sync.exe

  7. Select the network types (Private and Public) you want to allow, then click OK.

Once added, Windows Firewall will allow Sync to connect normally, helping to prevent upload, download, or connection issues.

Windows Defender

To add Sync as an exception:

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start Menu.

  2. Click Virus & threat protection.

  3. Under Virus & threat protection settings, click Manage settings.

  4. Scroll down to the Exclusions section and click Add or remove exclusions.

  5. Click + Add an exclusion, then choose Folder or Process.

    • Folder: Add the folder where Sync is installed, usually:
      C:\Program Files\Sync
    • Process: Add the Sync application process, usually:
      Sync.exe
  6. Browse to and select the item you want to exclude, then click Open.

Once added, Windows Defender will skip scanning Sync’s files and processes, preventing it from being blocked or slowed down.
