When you download multiple files or folders from Sync, they are packaged into a zip file directly in your browser. Because of this, the size of what you can download in one batch depends on the browser you're using. This article explains those limits, how to check your download size before you start, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Browser size limits
Because the zip is assembled in your browser, the maximum size you can download in a single batch depends on which browser you're using. This is a browser-level constraint, not a Sync limitation.
| Browser | Size limit |
|---|---|
| Chrome / Edge | No fixed browser limit, depends on device storage and performance. |
| Firefox | 2 GB |
| Safari desktop | 2 GB |
| Mobile browsers | 100 MB or less |
Note: Chrome and Edge can handle very large downloads, but performance will still depend on your computer’s available storage, memory, browser environment, and the size of the download.
How to check the size of your download
Before starting a large download, it's a good idea to confirm the total size of your selection so you can avoid hitting your browser's limit mid-download. Here's how to check:
- Select the file or folder you want to download.
- Open the file info panel on the right-hand side of the web panel.
- The total size of your selection is displayed there.
If the total size is close to or exceeds your browser's limit, split your selection into smaller batches and download them separately, or switch to Chrome or Edge for larger archives.
Troubleshooting common download issues
If your download doesn't go as expected, the steps below cover the most common issues and how to resolve them.
Download failed with a size limit error
If your selected files exceed your browser's limit, Sync will show an error message before or during the download. To resolve this:
- Check the total size of your selection using the file info panel (see above).
- Split your selection into smaller batches and download them separately.
- Switch to Chrome or Edge if possible. These browsers use disk-backed storage and support much larger downloads.
Download appears to complete but no file is saved
If the download finishes but you can't find the zip file:
- Check your browser's default download location (usually the Downloads folder).
- In Chrome, you may have been prompted for a save location. Check whether a dialog appeared and was dismissed.
- If you're using Brave, try the same download in Chrome or Edge, as Brave can silently fail on larger archives.
Progress indicator seems stuck or shows "complete" too early
The download progress reflects the number of files being assembled into the zip. The completion status will only update once the zip has been fully saved to your device. If it appears to finish before a file appears, give it a moment, particularly for larger downloads on slower connections.
Files are missing from the zip
If a file was in the process of syncing when you initiated the download, it may not have been available to include. Sync will surface an error if any files couldn't be added. If you see this, wait for your files to finish syncing and try again.
I cancelled the download partway through
Cancelling mid-download is safe. Sync will release any temporary storage used during assembly. Simply re-initiate the download when you're ready.
