How to resolve incorrect storage calculation issues

Files in your Sync folder and Vault count towards your storage quota, while deleted files and version history do not. You can check your storage usage in the account settings on the web panel or through the mobile and desktop apps.

If you notice a difference between the size of your local Sync folder and what appears across your devices, there are several possible reasons for the discrepancy. Try the steps below if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • The Sync folder on your computer has more files than what appears in the app.
  • The Sync folder across multiple computers seems to have a different file count or different sizes.
  • The storage space reported by Sync is never accurate.

Clear the cache

The Sync folder on your computer contains hidden temporary cache files that take up additional space compared to what gets synced to the cloud. Clear the Desktop App Cache to confirm if this is the issue.

Check if CloudFiles is enabled

The latest Sync desktop apps include a Files on Demand feature, which automatically moves files that haven’t been accessed recently to the cloud, helping free up space on your local device. When this feature is enabled, Windows File Explorer and macOS Finder may show the Sync folder using less space than the total storage reported in the cloud. This behavior is expected.

Check if Selective sync is enabled

(Note: Selective sync is only available in the 2.2.x version of the app.)

Selective sync lets you choose which folders in your Sync folder are synced to each device. As a result, the Sync folder may show different content or use different amounts of space on each computer. Folders that aren’t selected won’t appear or take up space on that device.

Check if you're a member of a Pro shared folder

Shared folders don't count towards the storage quota of free users if they are shared from a Pro user. This means that your Sync storage count may not include the shared files in the storage total, even though those files do take up space on your computer.

Understand how macOS measures storage

If you're using a Mac, you might notice a small discrepancy in reported storage. This is because Sync defines 1 MB as 1024 KB, while macOS Finder uses 1 MB = 1000 KB. As a result, storage usage may appear slightly lower in Sync compared to what Finder shows.
