How does Sync work?

Sync keeps your files safe, up to date, and accessible across all your devices. When you add files to Sync, they’re automatically backed up to the cloud and available from your computers, mobile devices, and through the web panel. In this article, we'll cover:

Desktop application

The Sync desktop app integrates directly with your computer, allowing you to automatically back up and sync your files across multiple devices. It’s ideal for continuous file synchronization, easy access, and seamless integration into your everyday workflow.

Sync Folder

When you install the Sync desktop app on your computer, it creates a Sync folder.

Anything you place in this folder is automatically uploaded to the cloud and kept in sync across all computers linked to your account. Adding a file to your Sync folder on one computer will make it appear on all your other connected computers and devices.

The Sync folder works just like any other folder on your computer; you can drag and drop, rename, or delete files, and Sync keeps everything up to date automatically.

CloudFiles

CloudFiles gives you full access to all of your Sync data without using up local disk space.

Files and folders marked with the CloudFiles icon are stored in the cloud and downloaded on demand when opened. This means you can view and access everything in your Sync account while keeping your computer storage free.

To make a CloudFile available offline:

  1. Right-click the file or folder.

  2. Select Sync → Make available offline.

Selective Sync

Selective Sync lets you control which folders from your Sync account are stored locally on your computer.

If you have a large account or multiple team folders, you can choose to sync only the folders you need, keeping everything else stored in the cloud.

This helps save hard drive space and improves performance, especially useful for devices with limited storage.

Note: The CloudFiles enabled Sync desktop app (version 5) does not include Selective Sync.

Mobile application

The Sync mobile application lets you take your files with you, giving you secure, on-the-go access from your phone or tablet. You can browse, preview, and share your files, upload photos and videos, and even make specific items available offline.

Access files on the app

You can browse, preview, and share your files, or upload new ones straight from your device. All files are stored securely in the cloud and instantly available across your other devices.

Camera uploads

When enabled, Camera Uploads automatically back up photos and videos from your mobile device to your Sync account.

Camera uploads are one-directional; files go from your phone to the cloud. Files added to your Sync account from other devices will not sync back down to your phone’s local storage.

Offline access

You can make specific files or folders available offline within the Sync mobile app.

Offline access is also one-directional; files are downloaded from the cloud to your mobile device, but changes made locally are not synced back automatically.

Web panel

The Sync web panel gives you quick and secure access to your account from any web browser. It’s perfect for managing your files remotely, sharing folders, and accessing your Vault storage without installing the desktop or mobile app.

Files tab

From the Files tab, you can view everything stored in your Sync folder, upload new files, download existing ones, and manage shared folders.

The Files tab in the web panel mirrors the same structure and content as your Sync folder on the desktop app, meaning any files you add, rename, or delete in one location will automatically update in the other.

Vault

Vault is your cloud-only storage space.

Files stored in Vault are not synced to your computer or mobile device. This makes Vault ideal for long-term storage, backups, or large files that you don’t need to access regularly.

You can upload, download, and manage files in Vault directly from the web panel or mobile app.
