This guide answers common questions about migrating your account to Teams+.
What is changing?
If you purchased a Teams plan before June 21, 2022, your account may not include all of the features available in our current Teams plans.
- For 1 TB Pro Teams Standard accounts, upgrades are not available limiting your ability to increase storage or add the RBAC features included with Teams Unlimited.
- For Teams Unlimited accounts, the full set of RBAC features included on the plan today is not available.
- For both plans, shared folder performance reliability is improved (when sharing with other team members on your plan).
To address this, we are offering a one-click migration that moves your account to the latest platform, unlocking the most up-to-date features and capabilities.
Who can migrate?
We will be rolling out migration in phases. As a Teams Administrator, you’ll be notified in advance when your account becomes eligible to migrate.
How does it work?
Once your account becomes eligible:
Navigate to the Users tab in your account.
Click the Migrate account button.
If the Migrate account button is disabled, it means one or more users must first enable the email-based password reset feature before migration can proceed.
For more information see, How do I enable or disable email-based password reset?
What happens during migration?
Once the migration has started:
All users are signed out of Sync (web and apps).
Apps will appear temporarily suspended while the migration runs.
Your plan will be updated.
You and your sub-users will receive email updates when the migration is started and once the migration is complete
After migration, all users will need to sign back in to their account. For users running the desktop:
Navigate to the Sync icon in the Windows system tray or Mac menu bar.
Click Please sign in to re-activate Sync.
A sign-in window will open with your email address pre-filled. Enter your password to sign back in to your account.
How long does migration take?
Timing depends on your team size and workload on the system. Before you start the migration, you’ll see an estimated time based on your account. But it usually takes less than an hour.
Will our files or shared folders be lost?
No. The migration is designed to move your account to Teams+ without losing files or folder contents. The main impact is a temporary sign-out and the need to log back in.
Will our price change?
No. Migration currently applies only to Teams Standard 1 TB and Teams Unlimited plans, both of which remain at the same price and storage capacity you are paying today. A small number of legacy Teams plans may require a different migration path and pricing. If that applies to your account, our team will contact you with clear guidance before any changes are made.
What features will change after migrating?
Please note the following changes before migrating:
Pro Teams Standard 1 TB:
The disable purge permission will no longer be available after migration. If this feature is required, you can choose not to migrate or consider upgrading to Teams Unlimited after migration. Email-based password reset is also required after migration.
Pro Teams Unlimited:
The missing RBAC features, as advertised, will be available after migration. If you were using the disable purge permission, you will need to re-enable it in the new RBAC tab. Email-based password reset is also required after migration.
Why does email-based password reset need to be enabled?
This step ensures no users are locked out during the process and allows for a seamless encryption key update required to enable the new features.
What if the migration can’t start right now?
There is a system limit on how many migrations can run simultaneously. If capacity has been reached, you may see a message indicating the system is busy. If this occurs, please try again later.
When is the best time to complete the migration?
We recommend completing the migration during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST. This helps ensure that if you need assistance during the process, our team is available to support you as quickly as possible.
What if the migration fails?
If something goes wrong:
You (the administrator) will receive an email indicating the migration failed.
Our support team will also be notified.
In most cases, your account will return to its previous working state and you can try again.
Do inactive or invited users migrate?
Migration applies to active users on the team. Users who are not active (or not fully part of the team) will not be included in the migration process.
