If you receive a warning after selecting “Restore Sync Folder” while installing the Sync desktop app, it means Sync has detected an existing Sync folder on your computer and is asking whether you want to use it again. The warning is as follows:
- WARNING: Proceed only if this is your correct Sync folder. An incorrect choice can cause unexpected file deletions. Please contact Sync support for help
This happens if Sync was previously installed on your device, an old Sync folder was not removed, or the folder belongs to a different Sync account. Choosing the wrong option can cause unexpected syncing behavior, including old files being uploaded or files being removed.
When you see this message, you will have two options:
Option 1: Reuse the existing Sync folder
Choose this option only if the folder is the correct Sync folder for the account you are currently signing into.
It should:
- belong to the same Sync account.
- contain the files you expect.
- be the most up-to-date version of your local Sync folder.
When you choose to reuse the folder, the app will scan its contents and sync that data with your account.
Do not choose this option if the folder is old, out of date, or from another Sync account.
Option 2: Do not reuse the existing Sync folder
Choose this option if you are not sure the folder is correct, or if you know it contains old or incorrect data.
To do this:
- Rename the old Sync folder to something like Sync.OLD, or delete it if you no longer need it.
- Continue with setup.
- Allow Sync to create a new Sync folder.
The app will then download the current contents of your Sync account into the new folder. If you are unsure, the safest option is usually to not reuse the folder and let Sync create a new one.
