How do I use Sync with my family?

Sync makes it easy for families to store, organize, and share files while giving each family member their own private storage space.

Which plan to choose?

Sync’s Pro Teams plans are a great option for families. Each plan includes an account administrator who can add and manage family members and handle billing for the account.

Each family member gets their own Sync account and dedicated storage, allowing them to keep personal files private while also using shared folders for content the family wants to access together, such as photos, videos, and important documents.

For example, with the Pro Teams 1TB plan, each family member receives their own 1TB of storage. Storage is allocated individually to each user rather than pooled across the family.

Setting up family shared folders

One person acts as the share owner and creates the shared folders.

  1. The share owner creates a folder in their Sync folder for each thing the family shares, for example Family photos or Household documents.
  2. Share each folder with the family members who need it. See our webinar or help article on how to use Team shared folders.
  3. Each person accepts the invitation from their own account.

Note: Keep shared folders side by side rather than nesting one inside another. A folder inside a shared folder cannot be shared separately.

Do my private files stay private?

Yes. Nothing in your account is visible to anyone else unless you explicitly share it within a shared folder.

Being a member of someone's shared folder gives them no access to the rest of your account, and gives you no access to theirs. Sync is end-to-end encrypted, so Sync staff cannot read your files either.

How does storage work?

Each account has its own quota.

  • Files you keep privately count against your own storage quota.
  • Files in a shared folder count against the share owner's storage quota and does not count against a share members quota.
