How to uninstall the Sync desktop application

This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough of the various uninstallation methods to ensure the Sync desktop app is removed from your computer. In this article, we will cover the following:


Standard Uninstall:

A standard uninstall will remove Sync, but retain system configuration information allowing you to easily restore your Sync account on the computer at a later date, if needed. Follow these instructions:

Windows macOS
  1. Click the Sync icon on the Windows system tray.
  2. Click the ⚙︎ (settings cog).
  3. Select Preferences from the menu.
  4. Select the Account tab.
  5. Click the Uninstall button and follow the prompts.

Full Uninstall:

Use the full uninstaller to remove all traces of Sync from your computer. Note that the uninstaller does not delete the existing Sync folder on the computer to help prevent unintentional data loss. After the uninstall is complete you will need to manually delete the Sync folder if needed.

Get the full uninstaller for Windows here, run the uninstaller and follow the prompts: https://sync.com/download/sync-uninstaller.exe

Manual Uninstall:

If the standard or full uninstall methods are unsuccessful, or if you receive the error message "Uninstall failed: Failed to terminate all Sync processes. Another user may be using Sync," you can proceed with a manual uninstall to remove Sync from your computer.

Step 1: Confirm that the Sync desktop app is not in use

  1. Select the Sync icon on the Windows system tray.
  2. Click the ⚙︎ (settings cog).
  3. Select, Quit Sync.
  4. Once completed, uninstall the Sync desktop app using the full uninstallerhttps://sync.com/download/sync-uninstaller.exe

Step 2: Manually remove the Sync desktop app 

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for the Sync desktop application and select the () ellipsis.
  4. Select Uninstall

  5. Once uninstalled, delete the Sync.Logs and Sync.Config folders.
    • Click on Start and type %appdata% in the search box. 
    • By default, it will open to the Roaming folder. Press Backspace from your keyboard to go up one folder level.
    • Double-click Local folder and then manually delete the Sync.Logs and Sync.Config folders.

  6. Reboot the computer.
  7. Confirm that the Sync desktop app is uninstalled by navigating to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
