Troubleshooting the Sync desktop not opening at startup

If the Sync desktop app does not open automatically when your computer starts, there may be an issue with how the app is installed, how it is configured to launch at startup, or where it is being launched from.

How to fix this:

1. Fully uninstall and reinstall the Sync desktop app

If Sync still does not start automatically, the desktop app may not be installed correctly. Complete a full uninstall of the application to remove any existing installation issues, then reinstall the latest version of the Sync desktop app.

After reinstalling, restart your computer and check whether Sync starts automatically.

2. Remove Sync from startup, then add it back

If Sync is already set to open at startup but still does not launch automatically, remove it from your startup settings and add it back.

Windows

  1. Open the Sync desktop app.

  2. Click the settings cog (⚙︎) and open Preferences.

  3. Make sure Run when computer is started is enabled.

  4. If it is already enabled, turn it off.

  5. Close the app, then reopen it.

  6. Turn Run when computer is started back on.

Restart your computer and check whether Sync opens automatically.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings or System Preferences.

  2. Go to General.

  3. Open Login Items & Extensions.

  4. Select Sync and click the minus (-) button to remove it.

  5. Click the plus (+) button and add Sync back to the list.

Restart your Mac and check whether Sync opens automatically.

3. Check whether you are using Sync with an external drive

If you are using Sync with an external hard drive, startup issues can happen if the drive was recently replaced, disconnected, or not available when your computer starts.

If the issue began after changing or replacing your external drive, perform a full uninstall and reinstall to make sure Sync is installed correctly and pointing to the right location.
